Charles Baldwin
Charles Lockwood Baldwin
1933 - 2022
Charles Lockwood Baldwin’s lifelong drive and commitment to achieving change through community action was forged during his study of economics at UCLA in the early 1960s. A soldier, journalist, legislator, educator, activist, fundraiser and community organizer, he was a champion of many progressive causes, particularly the building of strong, healthy communities, and the development of renewable and sustainable sources of energy without the destruction of the natural environment. He was an indefatigable worker, a fearless and curious adventurer, an expert negotiator, a creative storyteller, a natural leader, an inventive gourmet cook, a wise counselor, a courageous advocate, a lover of children and education, an innovative thinker, an inspiring mentor, a merciless tease, a thoughtful scholar, and an avid gardener. He was, above all, a devoted husband, father, and friend, with a generous and playful soul, a keen intellect, and a compassionate and loving heart.
Charles passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 25, 2022, at the age of 88. His spirit and memory are cherished by his wife Jeanne, four children, and six grandchildren, and by the many students, community leaders, and changemakers who were touched by his life, and with whom he worked so tirelessly and selflessly to make this world a better place. A funeral service is not planned, but those who knew Charles are encouraged to share stories about him and help celebrate his life by joining the Facebook group “Friends of Charles Baldwin” and posting there.
Charles believed strongly that each of us, acting separately or together, has the power and the responsibility to create positive change in our communities and the world. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that you honor him by doing what you can to change our world for the better. Get engaged with your local community, and make your voice heard. Volunteer and/or donate, either to an organization he supported, such as Sustainable Silverton (www.sustainablesilverton.org), Silverton Progressives (https://www.facebook.com/SilvertonProgressives/), or to any group, candidate or effort that you think best embodies his ideals. Be informed, and vote. Help others to find the same enthusiasm that Charles brought to his life and work in pursuit of a better world.
